The state capital of Queensland is a laid back sub-tropical city that makes the most of it's great weather and riverside location to provide an enjoyable and relaxing city break.

Whilst not being quite on the scale of Sydney or Melbourne, Brisbane has more than enough things to do to keep you happily occupied for a few days, especially if you are willing to go a little way out of the city to explore Moreton Bay, the national parks, the Gold Coast or the Sunshine Coast, all of which are an hour or so away.

Extra tips for visiting Brisbane

Visiting South East Queensland

With everything in South East Queensland so close, you could easily plan an extended trip that takes in more than one central location. South of Brisbane is the Gold Coast, the tourist city that is strung along a wide sandy beach, has a multitude of attractions (inclduding Australia's best theme parks), and a hinterland worth visiting. A little further south of the Gold Coast, over the NSW border, is Byron Bay. It's a small town with an impressive coastline, which includes mainland Australia's most easterly point at the lighthouse, and a reputation for good food and relxing times. North of Brisbane is the Sunshine Coast. Here you will find a well developed but much smaller scale counterpart to the Gold Coast. Noosa is the stand out town and it's hinterland is also worth a drive up.
